The blacked-out grille, black window trim, black emblems, and black mirror caps all add some flair to this version. There are 20-inch wheels on the vehicle that have been blackened. The carpeted floor mats include distinctive emblems, and black interior decorations can be found throughout the vehicle.

However, the 8-inch touchscreen is standard across all Ascent models save the base model. Subaru’s Starlink multimedia system isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but it’s easy to use and responsive enough for most people. The Ascent comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although a built-in navigation system is an option.
Passenger satisfaction is a strong suit of the Ascent. It has a roomy second-row captain’s chair that can be adjusted fore and aft, tip and slide for simple access to the third row, and comfortable bucket seats in the front. There isn’t a lot of headroom in the backbench, but it’s not as bad as in rival vehicles, and the bottom cushion is high enough that your knees aren’t at chin level when you sit back there. The small grasp handles on the second-row seatbacks are also a favorite feature of mine. They make it a little easier to go to the third row.

Although the Ascent isn’t a fast sports car, its overall performance is solid. However, I’d like it if the “gearbox” were more fluid. Even though CVTs don’t shift, this transmission feels clumsy and shudders slightly at lower speeds from time to time.
